The Yard And Garden Water Conservation
One of the biggest water wasters in the average yard is the grass lawn. If you live in a drought prone area consider eliminating or reducing the size of your lawn.
Grassy areas can be replaced with water conserving plants, gravel, or even artificial turf. Areas that are kept as grass lawns may be made more water efficient by simply letting the grass grow a bit longer. Grass cut short is very water intensive, while longer grass is generally much healthier. Grass in shadier areas will usually use less water than grass in full sun. If you decide to eliminate some of your lawn you may get the best savings by eliminating the sunniest sections.
Finally, some varieties of grass need far less irrigation than others to stay green. If you do keep a large lawn consider researching varieties that are best for conservation in your area and switch to one of those.
For plants in non lawn areas look at “water wise” choices for your area. Most garden centers will have a section devoted to these plants. They may have experts on staff or even classes. You can also find low maintenance plants by noticing what does well in your neighborhood with minimal irrigation. If a plant does well in your neighbor’s yard chances are it will do well in yours. Do be sure to notice the conditions in your neighbor’s yard, as a plant happy in shade might not survive in full sun. Finally, look at what native plants are available in your area. These are plants that have evolved over years to survive in your exact climate. Most garden centers will have a section devoted to native plants.
If your yard has an irrigation system consider switching some or all of it to drip irrigation. The typical irrigation system uses sprinklers to spray water on your grass and plants. This leads to a lot of waste as the water will often be sprayed onto sidewalks or the street as well as onto your plants. Spraying will also generally have runoff, which once again does not benefit your plants. Drip irrigation is a tiny nozzle that goes right to a plant giving it a slow soaking. A slow soaking is best for the plant and should have no runoff.
Also remember to only water your garden early on the morning or late in the afternoon. Watering in the heat of the day will lead to more evaporation by the sun, and less irrigation for your plants.
Grey water is a fantastic source to supplement your garden’s irrigation needs. Grey water is non sewage waste water from your home, including your clothes washer and kitchen sink. Elaborate grey water systems hook right up to your waste lines and will hold the water for irrigating your yard. However, a simpler system is simply to use a dishpan to wash your dishes. Instead of dumping the dirty water down the sink when you are finished take that water out and use it on your plants. The small amounts of food and soap in the water are beneficial to most plants.
A rain barrel is an ancient but effective way of saving water. This is pretty much what it sounds like. You put large container under your roofs downspout to collect the rain. Use this water on your plants. Very easy.
So there you have a few ideas for conserving water. Consider trying out one or two of these for your yard, and start saving today!
